I was out chasing some local storms near Ottawa and decided to pay a visit to the new radar installation in Franktown, Ontario.

The radar installation is so new that it is not operational yet, but it should be in a few weeks.

Canada is in the process of replacing most of their weather radar stations with new, modern systems that are more powerful and much higher resolution.

The unit that you see in the video was built from scratch. The old unit that it replaced has been completely dismantled, and you can actually see some discolouration on the gravel surfaces where old pads of the replaced system stood.

Hopefully with the new radar systems, we will get better weather forecasting, storm warnings, and earlier tornado detection and warnings.
