God is still a God who is involved with his children here on earth. God was busy with his people, Israel, all the time. When they veered off course, He slowly but surely brought them back in the right direction.
God talked to his children Himself, but often also used angels to bring messages to people on his behalf: 2If the old message delivered by the angels was valid and nobody got away with anything, do you think we can risk neglecting this latest message, this magnificent salvation?
There are many examples of angels in the Old Testament. God gave Moses the ten commandments and an angel to protect him all the way and guide him in the right direction. When Joshua took over from Moses, the angels also helped him enter the promised land.
The angel helped Hagar to go back to the woman she had worked for so that God’s plans could work out. Two angels warned Lot about God’s plan to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Angels visited Isaac and Jacob, as well as the great prophets, Elija and Elisha. And there are many more examples.
Angels were God’s spokespersons in the Old Testament. They communicated God’s wisdom and truth to his people. If people didn’t do what the angels said, there were major repercussions. Often the people suffered because of their disobedience. Often the people were left to their own devices and allowed to suffer the consequences of their actions.
Today, angels still act as God’s messengers, but we’re also extremely privileged to have the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit doesn’t come and go, but is with us all the time.
With every decision we make, no matter how small, we can ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. The problem is that we make so little space for Him in our lives that we do not recognise his voice.
There are so many voices in our heads. The voice of finances that usually talk loudest and push hardest. It may be the voice of your job and the worry whether you will still have a job tomorrow. Maybe it’s your health that shout loudest. Or is it the deafening silence of not fitting in anywhere?
I also struggle the hear the voice of the Holy Spirit through all the voices shouting out loud. But it is my responsibility to be quiet and silence all the other voices in my head. Then I will be able to hear the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit. Then I will hear what choice I should make. Then it will become easier to live within God’s guidelines.
God still talks to us today. God also talks in different ways. He talks through our circumstances, via his Word, and by way of our hearts. God also talks to us via other people, and also through our dreams and thoughts.
Take care to listen…
Can you hear God speak?
Are you quiet enough?
What do you need to do differently?
Father, thank you for still speaking today. I realise I must become quieter in order to hear your whisper. Please lead me on the right way. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
